Portuguese Sweet Bread
aka Hawaiian Sweet Bread

As you can see from the images on the right, Portuguese Sweet Bread can be formed into a variety of shapes. The traditional shape is round and baked in metal pie tins.

Mix together in a small bowl:

      2 packages dry yeast
      1/4 Cup warm water

Melt:

      1/2 stick of butter

Warm (not hot or boiling):

      1 Cup milk

Put the warmed milk and melted butter into a large mixing bowl.
Add and mix:

      3 eggs
      1 Cup sugar
      1 teaspoon salt


Add and mix:

      5 Cups All Purpose Flour

Kneed for 10 to 15 minutes.

Cover and let raise for about an hour.

Punch down.

With buttered hands, make two balls of dough and place each ball in a buttered pie tin.

Let them raise for another hour.

Bake 350° for about 20 minutes.

When completely baked the crust will a dark mahogany brown.

NOTE: If you choose to bake the bread in glass, then reduce the oven temperature to 325°.
