A Day at the Nevada County Fair with
Lynda C. Canning & Jack Lennard
Opening Day - August 12, 2009 - Nevada County, California

Lynda Canning, Thom Appleby, Jack Lennard and Chris Dabis were VIP's at the 2009 County Fair. At 9:00 a.m. we entered through the main gate and turned left to see this view. Lynda and Chris continued forward and were treated to a private breakfast. Thom and Jack opted to walk down Gold Path, shown to the right.

After one hour of visiting a few of the vendor's booths, Jack made his way to the horse stables. Here he is seen petting one of the draught horses. We were told that this particular horse is known as an "English Shire".

It didn't take but a few minutes for Jack to become more relaxed with this horse. Jack learned how to offer a hand full of hay to the horse, in a manner that leaves all fingers intact.

A family works on the tack (bridle, saddle, harnesses, etc.). They clean the items by gently scrubbing the items with a brush, the size of a toothbrush, wet with soapy water. They hand dry the items and then hand rub special oil into the leather. The last step is to polish the metal parts.

We saw a half-dozen youngsters presenting their poultry for judging purposes at the Fair. These youngsters are not from our Fair, but they are very typical of the groups we have. Their birds are well cared for, nearly becoming pets. The youngsters keep accounting records detailing the amount of money they spent on feed and supplies, the amount of time they spent with their bird and a journal of the bird's growth and physical issues.

From such record keeping they are well equipped to deal with agri-business administration, and many have gone into the corporate world with their solid base of 'actual' knowledge.

Have you heard about a lop-eared rabbit? Well, now you've seen one!

Alpaca. Read more below.

Seems at times that 'everyone' knows that a goat will eat anything, thus the need to place a sign "Do Not Feed the Goats".

Gold Path: This is where Thom and Jack began their day at the Fair as they looked at, and purchased, items they wanted for their own personal pleasure.

This is a small glimpse of the carnival area. Though Jack had indicated that he wanted to shoot the rifles, as he did last year, that desire never materialized as other wishes had a higher priority.

Lovely horses being admired by young and old alike.

Rick Giersch, step-son of Carlota Busch Giersch, enjoyed the simple pleasure of giving. Through Rick's efforts these Budweiser Clydesdales are an annual tradition that hallmark our County Fair. For more than 20 years Rick arranged for the Clydesdales, the wagon masters, their tenders, along with the Budweiser wagon and the Dalmation dog, to be brought from St. Louis, Missouri, for us to enjoy. Now, it has become a double blessing as we enjoy the team and recall our late friend, Rick Giersch.

Ice Cream takes on a magic of its own when Deb and Bob Peterson make it! This is their Street Car Named Desire, a renovated rubber-tired trolly-bus that they use for their BIG events. Our Nevada County Fair is one such event!

What do they call their Ice Cream? Well, it's Lazy Dog Ice Cream, of course. For $3.00 you can have a taste of frozen heaven, in dozens of flavors!

Just after having their lunch, Lynda Canning and her son Thomas Appleby enjoy a brief rest.

These polled beef cattle are being judged for their form and superiority as breeding stock.

Lovely Hereford cow and calf. Nature sets the rules and this calf decided that a meal was in order regardless of the judging soon to occur.
